The Histological and Biological Observation on Spongioblastoma

Abstract
The spongioblastoma has been one of those controversial gliomas for it¢¥s nomenclature, pathogenesis, biological behaviour and malignity. The author made histological and clinical examinations on five cases of spongioblastoma which were histologically verified, though atypical. Beside the detailed review of literature on the genesis of the spongioblast and spongioblastoma, a review of the extremely different opinions and findings on it¢¥s malignity and benignity were also made.
The summary and conclusions are as follows:
1) Four cases were obtained from the cerebellum and one case from the cerebrum and in all five cases, there were atypical histological findings consisting mainly of unusual findings of mitosis, necrosis, and vascular peculiarity.
Clinical histories were also unusual compared to the ordinary cases of Spongiablastoma.
2) In all five cases. Rosenthal fibers were found and I propose these Rosenthal fibers may be metamorphosis of subependymal glia-fibers and I agree with the view of Ziilch who states that Rosenthal fibers are one of the characteristic findings of spongioblastoma.
3) The definition of spongioblastoma and its malignity and benignity were made in detail with the help of literature.
